Held under the theme "Reimagining Student Success and Expanding Opportunity for All", the Siyaphumelela Conference, held at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre, Boksburg, Johannesburg, from 23 to 26 June 2026, brought together diverse stakeholders from both public and private sectors, including education leaders, policymakers and philanthropic partners, to foster open dialogue and collaborative strategies aimed at improving student success.

And as the saying goes, "into emnandi iyaphindwa", loosely translated as "repetition is the mother of learning", the Unisa delegation took part for the second time in 2026, with four presentations showcasing Unisa’s student success initiatives. It goes without saying that this continued participation marks an important milestone for the institution.

Led by Prof Meahabo Magano from the Department of Tuition, Support and Facilitation of Learning (DTSFL), alongside Lekau Rachidi, Manager of the Student Retention Unit, Unisa’s participation in the Siyaphumelela Conference underscores its commitment to fostering a culture of evidence-based practice, collaboration and innovation in support of student success.

Equally important is the opportunity the conference provided for the institution to engage with sector-wide insights and global best practices, strengthening its ability to respond to the evolving needs of its diverse student body. The conference featured engaging panel discussions and research- and practice-based presentations showcasing innovative approaches to student support and success.

As echoed throughout the conference discussions, a collective, collaborative approach remains essential. Together, we will not only reimagine but also create and expand opportunities for all Unisa students to achieve success.
