Enthusiastic CAS staff members ensured that the event was a resounding success
A powerful collaboration between the College of Accounting Sciences (CAS) and the Gauteng Counselling Department brought together more than 700 accounting students, alongside leading companies and professional bodies, for a dynamic and impactful career engagement event.
Held on 23 April 2026, the event created a vibrant platform for students to connect directly with potential employers and industry stakeholders. Many exhibitors described the initiative as well organised, relevant and timely, noting the high level of student engagement and the quality of interactions throughout the day.
The event forms part of CAS’s broader strategy to strengthen graduate employability and respond meaningfully to industry needs. This approach is informed by insights from the 2024 College of Accounting Sciences' Employer Survey, conducted by the Directorate of Institutional Research. The survey aimed to gather employer feedback on the preparedness, skills and performance of Unisa accounting graduates.
Findings from the study are being used to shape targeted interventions that enhance students' academic and professional readiness. These efforts are aligned with the college’s commitment to producing graduates who are responsive to the evolving demands of the accounting profession.
Since the release of the survey results, CAS has intensified its efforts to position itself as a leading institution in accounting education. A series of initiatives has been introduced to strengthen industry partnerships, improve curriculum relevance and expand opportunities for students to gain exposure to the professional environment.
Events such as the April career engagement not only bridge the gap between academia and industry, but also empower students with the knowledge, networks and confidence needed to transition successfully into the workplace. For many students, the opportunity to engage directly with employers provided valuable insights into career pathways, expectations and emerging trends within the accounting sector in South Africa.
CAS continues to play a critical role in shaping the future of the profession by ensuring that its graduates are not only academically competent, but also equipped to contribute meaningfully to the broader economic landscape.
