The Unisa Student Services Committee of Council (SSCoC) recently paid an oversight visit to the Gauteng Region’s Johannesburg Regional Service Centre (JRSC).
To reassure the regional management that welcomed them, SSCoC Chairperson, Dr Xolani Khohliso, stressed that the visit was not about policing but about understanding the realities on the ground. He noted that the committee was engaging with different centres to see for themselves what was happening, so that they could participate in Council meetings from an informed position. “The purpose of the oversight visit is to assess the work done, to appreciate it, and to identify where the region needs more support,” he said.
Acting Regional Director, Dr Erin Naudé, provided an overview of the region, highlighting successes and challenges, along with improvement plans currently in place. Johannesburg Regional Student Representative Council (SRC) Chairperson, Siyathokoza Nkwanyana, outlined the challenges faced by students and the council structure, while SRC Secretary Katlego Mokoena reviewed the structure’s successes this year despite obstacles.
Accompanied by the Acting Regional Director, centre management and JRSC staff, the committee members toured the nine-floor building. They visited various service units and engaged directly with staff and students regarding the services provided.
