Eastern Cape autumn graduations celebrate excellence, achievement and new beginnings

Unisa’s Eastern Cape Autumn Graduations were held from 18 to 19 June 2026 at the East London International Convention Centre (ELICC), bringing together graduates, families, friends, and members of the university community to celebrate a significant milestone in students' academic journeys.

The atmosphere throughout the two-day graduation ceremony was filled with excitement, pride, and joy as graduates walked across the stage to receive their qualifications in the presence of their loved ones and supporters.

Acting Vice-Principal for Teaching, Learning, Community Engagement, and Student Support, Dr Azwinndini Tshivhase, delivered the welcome address at all graduation sessions. He congratulated the graduates on their achievements and encouraged them to use their knowledge and skills to serve their communities and contribute towards the public good.

Tshivhase reminded graduates to take pride in being part of a university with a rich history of transforming lives and shaping futures for more than 150 years. He further highlighted the value of a Unisa qualification, noting that many employers recognise Unisa graduates for their ability to work independently, demonstrate resilience, and apply self-directed learning skills in professional environments.

More than 1 600 qualifications were conferred during the two-day graduation ceremony, including three Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualifications, marking the continued contribution of the region towards advancing knowledge and research.

The graduations also celebrated the achievements of three Eastern Cape Regional Student Representative Council (RSRC) members who successfully completed their qualifications. These included Aseza Nteleza, who obtained a Bachelor of Arts in African Languages, Tina Tsibiyane, who obtained a Bachelor of Commerce in Law, and Unathi Zono, who graduated with a Bachelor of Consumer Sciences in Food Service Management.

This milestone marked the first time that the Eastern Cape Region had more than two regional SRC members graduating in the same graduation cycle. Their achievements demonstrate their commitment to academic excellence and serve as an inspiration to the students they represent and lead.

The region also celebrated the academic achievements of two staff members who graduated during the ceremonies. Olwethu Mgwatyu obtained an Advanced Diploma in Information Resource Management, while Shanaaz Daniels graduated with a Bachelor of Education Honours degree.

The Eastern Cape Autumn Graduations were a true celebration of perseverance, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. The occasion honoured not only the academic achievements of graduates but also their potential to become future leaders, innovators, and agents of positive change. As they embark on the next chapter of their journeys, graduates were encouraged to embrace the opportunities ahead and continue making meaningful contributions to society.
