Prof Malik Maaza, UNESCO-Unisa Africa Chair in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology
Professor Malik Maaza of the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) has done it again. He has received the 2022 Spirit of Abdus Salam Award presented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the Trieste System.
The award was presented to Maaza, who is the incumbent of the UNESCO-Unisa Africa Chair in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, “[f]or his major role in helping to shape Africa's science and technology landscape, on top of his own prolific research output with which he has trained over a hundred young African students, as well as a number from other areas in the South.”
The family of Nobel Prize winner Abdus Salam set up the Spirit of Abdus Salam Award, which was awarded to Maaza who has worked tirelessly to further Abdus Salam's humanitarian passion and vision for the cooperation, promotion and development of science and technology in the disadvantaged and developing world.
In congratulating Maaza, CGS said that he has put Unisa on the map and is making the both the college and the institution proud.
